Our Approach to Concussion Care

We know that no two concussions are alike. That’s why we take a personalized
approach to each patient, using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to evaluate
and monitor your condition. Here’s how we help:

Comprehensive Evaluation

Your journey begins with a thorough evaluation that includes a detailed history, neurological assessments, and diagnostic imaging if needed. We assess your brain function, coordination, balance, and nervous system to understand the full impact of your concussion.

We use specialized neurological testing, to identify areas of dysfunction in the brain. These tests allow us to design a treatment plan that targets the specific areas needing attention and improvement.

Concussions often affect your balance, vision, and coordination. We incorporate a variety of therapies, including balance exercises, vision therapy, and sensory-motor training to help you regain optimal function. These therapies are personalized to your needs and progress to ensure the most effective recovery.

Your recovery is a journey, and we’re with you every step of the way. Regular check-ins, reassessments, and updates to your treatment plan ensure that we address any new challenges that arise. Our goal is to help you fully recover and return to your normal activities with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions About Concussion & Post-Concussion Symptoms

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that can occur after a blow or force to the head, face, neck or body that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull.

A concussion can affect how a person thinks, feels, moves and functions. You do not have to lose consciousness to have a concussion, and symptoms can vary considerably from person to person.

Common concussion symptoms include headache, dizziness, balance problems, nausea, fatigue, sensitivity to light or sound, blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, brain fog, memory problems, sleep disturbances and feeling generally “off.”

Some people also experience difficulty reading, using screens, exercising, driving or tolerating busy environments.

Yes. Most people who sustain a concussion do not lose consciousness.

A concussion should be considered when symptoms develop following a blow or force to the head, face, neck or body. If a concussion is suspected, appropriate medical assessment is important.

Recovery time varies. Many people improve within days to several weeks, while others experience symptoms that persist longer and interfere with school, work, exercise, sport or everyday activities.

If symptoms are not improving as expected, further assessment may help identify specific factors contributing to persistent symptoms and guide an individualized rehabilitation plan.

Persistent symptoms after concussion can have several contributing factors rather than one single cause.

Problems involving the vestibular system, eye movements and vision, balance, headaches, sleep, the neck, exercise tolerance, cognitive function and other factors may contribute to ongoing symptoms.

Identifying which systems are affected can help make rehabilitation more specific to the individual rather than treating every concussion the same way.

Dizziness and balance problems are common following concussion and can have several possible causes.

Concussion can affect the vestibular system, eye-head coordination, balance and the way the brain processes movement and visual information. Other conditions, including BPPV, migraine and autonomic dysfunction, may also contribute to post-concussion dizziness.

Assessment can help determine which factors may be contributing to the symptoms and guide appropriate rehabilitation.

Yes. Concussion can affect eye movements and visual function. Symptoms may include blurred or double vision, difficulty focusing, sensitivity to light, headaches with visual activity, difficulty reading or discomfort using computers and other screens.

When visual or eye-movement problems are identified, appropriate rehabilitation or referral to another qualified healthcare provider may be recommended depending on the findings.

After concussion, some people become more sensitive to visually complex or moving environments. Grocery-store aisles, crowds, scrolling on a phone, computer screens or watching fast-moving objects may trigger dizziness, headache, nausea, fatigue or a feeling of being overwhelmed.

These symptoms may be associated with difficulties involving visual, vestibular and eye-movement systems. Assessment can help determine which activities provoke symptoms and whether targeted rehabilitation may be appropriate.

Yes. Rehabilitation may be beneficial when specific problems contributing to persistent symptoms are identified.

Depending on the individual, concussion rehabilitation may address balance, vestibular function, eye movements, visual-motion sensitivity, coordination, the neck and gradual tolerance to physical and cognitive activity.

The goal is to identify the factors limiting recovery and progressively rehabilitate them rather than simply waiting for symptoms to disappear.

At Cerebral Health and Spine Care, concussion rehabilitation is individualized according to the patient’s history, symptoms, examination findings and functional goals.

Depending on the individual, assessment may examine balance, vestibular function, eye movements, visual processing, coordination, reaction time, the cervical spine and tolerance to physical activity.

Findings are used to develop a rehabilitation program that can be gradually progressed according to the patient’s symptoms, tolerance and recovery.

A short period of relative rest is often appropriate immediately following a concussion, but prolonged complete physical and cognitive rest is generally not recommended for most patients.

A gradual return to appropriate physical, cognitive, school, work and daily activities is typically encouraged according to symptoms and medical guidance. The appropriate pace will vary depending on the individual and stage of recovery.

Returning to exercise and sport should occur gradually rather than immediately returning to full activity.

Athletes should progress through an appropriate return-to-sport process and should not return to unrestricted sport until medically cleared when required. If symptoms return during progression, the athlete may need to reduce activity and be reassessed.

Not necessarily. Some patients come to Cerebral after already receiving a concussion diagnosis, while others have persistent symptoms following an injury and are looking for further assessment and rehabilitation.

When a concussion is suspected or medical diagnosis or clearance is required, patients should be evaluated by an appropriate medical provider. Rehabilitation needs can then be addressed within our scope of care and coordinated with other healthcare providers when appropriate.

Cerebral Health and Spine Care in London, Ontario provides individualized assessment and rehabilitation for people experiencing concussion and persistent post-concussion symptoms.

Our approach focuses on identifying specific factors that may be contributing to symptoms such as dizziness, balance problems, visual difficulties, headaches and exercise intolerance, then developing a rehabilitation program based on the patient’s findings and functional goals.

When appropriate, concussion care can be coordinated with physicians, nurse practitioners and other healthcare providers as part of a multidisciplinary approach to recovery.

Seven years ago my life changed instantly. I went from my "usual" self of being an active person who loved gardening and walking to being unsteady, barely being able to walk and other health issues. I was hunched over, wobbly and felt dizzy, nauseous and then vertigo. Everyday I woke up focusing on moving as best I could. I was determined not to get discouraged but when every healthcare professional, while having various opinions of what may be the cause, didn't know how to treat me. I found out about Dr Spiro on line and decided to give him a call. BEST decision ever! I was greeted over the phone by Carla. She was so friendly and helpful that I instantly felt comfortable. I came in for a comprehensive assessment. I have never had any professional spend that amount of time testing and talking to me to find out what was going on with my body. Dr Spiro is honest about how his work can or cannot help you. He truly cares and knows what he is doing. He tailors a treatment plan specifically for you. After only a few visits my balance started to improve and I walk more upright. My head feels clearer and the dizziness is fading. I feel better than I have for a very long time.I am still working with him and with every visit I feel confident that things will get better. I strongly recommend him and I am extremely grateful that he is here in London. Thank you Dr Spiro and Carla for giving me hope and support. Now I don't feel like I am fighting my battle alone.

I saw Dr. Spiro for a concussion that has lasted over a year now and I am so happy I made the trip to see him. I have seen many practitioners with little to no improvement until I saw Dr. Spiro and he has been by far the most helpful in my healing journey. His assessment was thorough and his treatments addressed issues specific to my concussion. He also provided an at home program with progressions that are easy to follow. Carla is also so kind and helpful! For those suffering from PCS I would highly recommend this clinic and functional neurology in general.

Dr spiro is amazing. I’ve been dealing with dizziness for almost 3 years straight now and it’s affected my life to the point I can’t work and I’ve seen pretty much every other doctor and specialist you can think of. I was starting to give up hope that I could find someone that can actually help me until I found dr spiro. I’ve been seeing him for over 4 months now and I’ve seen a great improvement and slowly getting back to my normal life again. I recommend anyone to come see dr spiro if they’re having unexplained dizziness and haven’t gotten any help anywhere.

I am incredibly grateful that I found Dr. Ioannidis. During the acute stage of vertigo, I had already visited the hospital and received treatment that unfortunately was not providing relief. Hoping to find answers, I visited Dr. Ioannidis's clinic. Dr. Ioannidis quickly assessed my condition, demonstrating both exceptional knowledge and the specialized tools needed to accurately diagnose the problem. He clearly explained the next steps and developed an effective treatment plan. As I continued working with him throughout my recovery, he created a targeted rehabilitation plan that has been instrumental in reducing my day-to-day symptoms. In addition to treating my initial vertigo, he also identified and promptly treated a separate, unrelated episode of vertigo caused by BPPV. Thanks to Dr. Ioannidis's expertise, thorough understanding of the complexities of my condition, and personalized care, I have been able to return to work and resume my normal daily routine. I highly recommend Dr. Ioannidis to anyone seeking knowledgeable, compassionate, and effective care.

I started working with Dr.Ioannidis about 1 month ago. At that time we went through an extensive and interactive neurological exam. He was very interested in what my goals were and making me feel instantly comfortable as I believed he had confidence in our future success. My main issues were on my ability to navigate the world around me,to feel grounded, to know with confidence where my arms and legs were. With this skill dampened I grew more isolated. I also have brain fog, feeling like a wet blanket over my brain making it hard to concentrate and read for very long. Over the last month my balance, equilibrium and feeling of being grounded have greatly improved. My brain fog is also starting to clear. This has created a steady platform for me with which to dive in and explore all the neurological findings. I am excited to continue my journey with Dr. Ioannidis and his team.

Dr. Spiro has given me my life back as a young woman with POTS and I'm only about a month into treatment! I wish more folks knew about functional neurology and how much it can help regulate the body as a whole. I've gone from mostly bed bound, walking minimally, to walking an hour at a time and getting back to things I love like yoga and birding. After feeling very hopeless and left with a notion from my other healthcare providers that this is my "new normal" with POTS, it was such a relief to hear Dr. Spiro say he doesn't accept the concept of "new normals". Looking forward to feeling even better in another month! And a special note to Carla the ever so lovely admin who brings a smile to my face every visit too!
